Lopez is missionary at large for Iowa District West of the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, and he has helped establish several similar programs in Lutheran churches. Lopez is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico.
Free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are held in the spring and the fall on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. Each session lasts eight weeks. The courses are open to anyone who wants to attend, and new members may join at any point during the eight-week period.
Students begin each session with a song in both English and Spanish with Pastor Lopez playing the guitar. Students then meet with an instructor during an English as a Second Language class offered at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Carroll, IA. An eight-week session of courses is offered each spring and fall, and the program is operated by church volunteers, along with Pastor Lopez and his wife, Paquita.
